Documentation of a one-day workshop with a team of Sea Ranch occupants taking part. A look at original plan and where it stands today using workshop techniques developed by the Halprin office.

A world-renowned landscape architect and environmental planner, Lawerence Halprin's favorite refuge was the Sea Ranch. Larry was at the forefront of urban design innovation in the United States. His practice comprises a catalogue of user -friendly environmental design in projects ranging from inner urban centers to National Parks. His projects include, in addition to the Sea Ranch: Ghirardelli Square, and early model for the reused of historic buildings in an urban environment; the plazas and fountains of Portland, Oregon, intended as participatory public open spaces; Seattle Freeway Park, designed to integrate an urban freeway into the fabric of a city; Levi Plaza in San Frnacisco, conceived as an urban corporate campus; and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, a presidential memorial in Washington DC that set a new standard for public involvement in the past. All of these projects were intended to lead participants to reassess the value and use of their resources, a reassessment that has become an ongoing activity of the Sea Ranch. This publication of Larry's last workshop at the Sea Ranch is meant as inspiration for Sea Ranchers, now and in the future.
