'High Contrast’ is a collection of eight paintings mostly made for new eyes. Hard-edged black-and-white images are shown to aid in early cognitive development; one parent likened such patterns to “baby LSD” (coincidentally, the working title of this book). Since 2021, Sarah Hotchkiss has made high contrast paintings as gifts for friends’ babies, indoctrinating them into her visual vocabulary. To the artist, that mesmerized fixation is the ultimate compliment from a viewer of any age.
