Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931), who was a painter, architect, theorist, art critic, and poet, is often remembered today only for his relationship with Mondrian and his crucial role within the De Stijl group.  Yet his essential and original contribution lies in his attempt to integrate painting into architectural space. This book aims to demonstrate the importance and influence of Van Doesburg within architectural research. It successively examines his contributions to the architecture of others, then his own constructions between 1917 and 1930, and finally the works that most closely embody the concept of colored space advocated by Van Doesburg: the private house and the Aubette café in Strasbourg (1927), which no longer exist today. While Van Doesburg has never ceased to interest artists, primarily as a pioneer of geometric abstract art, it would be unfair, as Gropius and Le Corbusier did, to overlook his undeniable influence and significant place in 20th-century architecture; this is what Evert van Straaten convincingly attempts to demonstrate.
