A detailed look at Eduardo Souto de Moura’s reconstruction of a ruined house in Braga, Portugal (1989–1994). The architect merely rebuilt the walls of the ruin, following the suggestions provided by the parts that had not collapsed, reproducing their tectonics. In doing so, he has emphasised a characteristic typical of vernacular constructions in this north-western region, namely the function of the jambs – comprising parallelepiped ashlar blocks mounted vertically – and mainly monolithic architraves that interrupt the fabric of the differently sized blocks and forms of the walls.
