Charles Jencks, author of The Language of PostModern Architecture and well-known architectural critic, is also an architect. This extra edition is to show the essence of Post-Modern architecture by introducing the works of Charles Jencks as a practitioner of Postmodern design. Accordingly all the works published in this issue were designed by him and display his design ability.

In two houses, the Thematic House in London and the Elemental House in Los Angeles (which are both his houses), Postmodern design was completely developed throughout. These design details have symbolic meanings and that is why this issue has the sub-title “Towards Symbolic Architecture”. Mark Girouard, a famous English historian, wrote an essay on these two houses.

Includes a revised ‘Evolutionary Trees’ (folded pages) in the ’The Battle of the Labels’. It was previously published in The Language of Post-Modern Architecture and lacks the 1980-85 portion, which we asked him to fill in.

It is in this issue that the renewed Evolutionary Trees (both Post-Modern and Late-Modern) were published for the first time. It will be a sensation all over the world and it is worth notice that many Japanese architects appeared in the 80-85 portion.
