This is the first book in the West to devote itself exolusively to the Art Nouveau style as it developed in Russia at the turn of the century. Elena Borisova and Grigory Sternin have surveyed the cultural and social contexts-as well as the specific stylistic traits-of a wide range of works to discover what defines this development in Russian art. Russian Art Nouveau was, of course, greatly affected by the West. A number of Russian artists worked in private ateliers in Paris and Munich; others made pilgrimages to the great European art centers; nearly all had occasion to see Puvis de Chavannes' fres-coes, paintings by the French Nabis artists and the Viennese Secessionists, posters by Toulouse-Lautrec, and other great works of the time.
