Guido Guidi's investigation of the Brion cemetery began in 1996 as a commission from the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal and lasted ten years, yielding over 600 color photographs taken with an 9-by-10 inch Deardorff camera. In keeping with an approach that he has been developing since the late nineteen-sixties, Guidi relied on the visual acuteness of the view camera to present the Brion cemetery as an object that is part of our contemporary landscape rather than as a timeless monument. In Guidi's images the consuming effects of the elements that are so often noticeable on Scarpa's work are mercilessly recorded by the lens: fissures, ruptures, moss, stains, and discoloration, conveying an image of an everyday place that is as vulnerable to the ravages of time as our own houses, streets, and cities.
