Architect Max Bächer established himself at the forefront of West German post-war architecture, considerably influencing the state’s architectural development from 1960 through the 21st century. In particular, he studied the architecture of fascism as a historical phenomenon. In this publication, Frederike Lausch analyses his extensive collection of documents for the first time, including on the National Socialist period. Bächer himself met Nazi architect Albert Speer in 1973. The previously unpublished record of that exchange is the starting point for this examination of Bächer’s intensive search to reveal the complex relationship between architecture and fascism.
