This volume presents the first examination of the late work of the influential 18th-century English architects Robert and James Adam. The work, compiled from drawings discovered by the author, is intended to reconstruct a volume likely planned by the Adam brothers to complement the other volumes they created to publicize their practice. However, this “pattern” book reveals inventive designs that depart from the classicizing ornateness associated with the Adam brothers. Forty-seven designs are presented in 200 illustrations, and the supplementary essay, “The Houses as Built,” identifies 16 works actually constructed.
