The 25th of January 2004 marked the 11th anniversary of the birth of the architect Aino Aalto,
Her centennial was never celebrated. At the time, Alvar Aalto's upcoming centenary year was being awaited, and Aino, who was a few years older than Alvar, was forgotten. That had also been Aino's fate on earlier occasions,
I originally intended to write an article on Aino’s and Alvar's correspondence, But soon after beginning to study the material, I realised that such an article would only touch upon the surface and it no longer seemed meaningful. The article was replaced by this preface, In human and artistic terms alike, the life of Aino and Alvar and their relationship would be worth a whole book. The more one delves into the subject, the more interesting the "enigma" of Aino becomes, and Aino's great significance in many respects becomes increasingly clearer.
