Max Dudler: Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development
Like many government projects, the renovation of the Berlin offices of the Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development was fraught with controversy. Master architect Max Dudler headed the project, which involved updating and adding to the building of the former Prussian Geological Institute, built 1875-1878. After a frequently contentious, decade plus process -- and a price tag of 164 million euros -- Dudler’s brilliant design sense has triumphed. The building retained its solid classical good looks, enhanced by an entirely appropriate, Dudler-designed addition. The result strikes a rare balance between a revived, restored prewar building and a confident new structure. Dudler’s powerful building is impressive primarily in terms of the urban landscape.
