This book is the account of a challenge: can we survey Carlo Scarpa's works with the rigor necessary to capture the "Scarpa machine" in all its parts, even the smallest, through geometric, topological, and morphological analyses? We know that architectural surveying is probably one of the most versatile means of investigation, certainly one of the most widely practiced. But its true meaning lies in that horizon of curiosity and wonder that motivates the architect, the historian, the technologist... when they question the building. It is in this context, in the mechanisms and purposes of the investigative work, that an analytical tool acquires validity and effectiveness. Surveying aims to construct plausible answers to the researcher's questions. This is where its possible role lies: in producing meaning and understanding of the work, within the skillful interplay of questions and answers.
