This issue highlights urban proposals since the 1960s which have involved Nikken Sekkei, an architecture firm headquartered in Tokyo. It has contributed to numerous urban policies and plans, but also sought to enrich the experience of city life through concrete projects. In many cases these projects required long-term commitment involving revisions and reconciliation of conflicting interests among stakeholders – a vital part of moving any project forward. The projects introduced here are examples of the results that were achieved and reflect a variety of approaches, from activities addressing the dynamic expression of the city to the actions of people who shape the city.
