When asked in an interview to Charles Eames what the design limits were, he answered with another question: What are the limits of the problems? The dictionary tells us that the etymology of the problem is very close to that of the project, both words imply putting or throwing something forward. It is something that we face and also something that we face. Some philosopher said that the real freedom is not in responding but in proposing problems, while scientists and artists alike have said that their solution depends on the way they are posed. This little book is based on the same question that was asked to Eames almost fifty years ago and between its pages the limits of new problems are probably traced or those of others already known are redrawn.
