Andy Warhol, Susan Sontag, John Lennon, Yoko OnoÑJonas Mekas knew them all. Pivotal filmmaker, poet, writer and co-founder of the Anthology Film Archives, Mekas (b. 1922) came from Lithuania to Brooklyn in 1949 and began shooting his first experimental films there, developing a form of film diary in which he recorded his daily observations. In the process, he became the barometer of the New York art scene and a pioneer of American avant-garde cinema. Starting in 1958 he also wrote on a wide range of subjects in his legendary weekly Movie Journal column in the Village Voice. This comprehensive collection of his published and unpublished writings, interviews, conversations, and reflections on dance, cinema, photography, music, art, philosophy and poetry from the 1950s to the present is complimented by an incredible archive of black-and-white photographs. Mekas has been and continues to be an unparalleled chronicler of the day.
