Sochi, a subtropical resort city on the Black Sea near the border of Russia and Georgia, will soon enter the world stage. The city will host several large-scale sporting events in the coming years: the 2014 Olympic Winter Games and matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The Moscow-based Strelka Institute (a postgraduate architecture program and think tank organized by Rem Koolhaus) recently invited artists Alina Schmuch and Franca Scholz to visit Sochi Losk is the result of their journey. Meaning glow or sheen, Losk focuses on the surfaces of contemporary urban Russian society: floors, interiors, pavings, facades. These are inscribed not only with the fantasy of wealth and importance, but also the persistent signs of poverty and the resonance of the Socialist past. Includes texts from Domus editor Joseph Grima and Simon Bieling and published on occasion of an exhibition at Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.
