The starting point of this essay is the simple question: Why is some architecture perceived as international (and the rest not)? Despite the casual use of the word in relation to architecture, it isn't always evident what, when, and how architecture becomes international. Nor is it obvious where this international architecture is located. The majority of architectural production never gets international recognition and won't reach an international audience. Only a fraction of it plays a role in what is commonly designated an international discourse. Where does the idea of international architecture come from, and where is this international architecture heading in this age of globalization?
