Frankfurt-born Bing was celebrated in the 1930's as "Queen of the Leica," and pioneered the use of the new 35mm camera in Paris. Along with Brassai, Man Ray, Cartier-Bresson, Dora Maar, and Florence Henri, she played a major role in making Paris the center of avant-garde photography. She moved to New York during the war and out down her camera for good in 1959, only to be rediscovered in the 70's.
