This issue shows three recently completed works by Herzog & de Meuron. Situated in France, Spain, and England, respectively, each began from existing structures and was subsequently remodelled to give it a renewed identity. In Colmar, this is expressed in a subterranean volume for the MusŽe Unterlinden that emerges in a pavilion set in a medieval context. In Madrid, the BBVA headquarters incorporates existing buildings to form a dense fabric between narrow, light-filled courtyards. In London, the Tate Modern extension uses the tanks of the old power station to create a twisting tower clad in a ceramic lattice. All are exemplary in their intelligent interpretation of continuity.
