Over a period of 15 years, the City of Zurich Building Authority organised 66 architectural competitions for city-funded residential buildings. The competitions resulted in 6,000 apartments.

The floor plan manual is a record of the exemplary floor plans of these buildings. The designs both challenge and develop established or orthodox layouts, while also promoting the examination of unconventional and creative concepts in order to test their suitability and function.
