On January 17, 1995, Kobe, in the Hyogo Prefecture of Japan, was struck by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake. Known as the Great Hanshin earthquake, Miyamoto began to document the destruction and damage immediately after, before clearing and reconstruction began. This volume presents his images of swayback buildings, collapsed roadworks, crumpled structures, and other evidence of infrastructure damage. Photographs by Ryuji Miyamoto
