In this issue, eight proposals for the coming expansion of Madrid’s Museo del Prado are reviewed in detail. Hailed as an extraordinary opportunity to redefine the public space of the Prado Campus, the building will be small in size but great in its symbolic power. The winning project of the international competition comes from a team led by Norman Foster and Carlos Rubio. Their design, which empties part of the existing structure to create a public portico, was tested against strong proposals from other leading firms such as David Chipperfield + B720, Cruz & Ortiz, OMA, and Souto de Moura. Also in this edition, a special dossier analysing the tactile possibilities of brick.
